Free Credit Reports – How to Get Them the Easy Way

Ariel Pryor asked:

You are entitled free credit reports annually. Your free credit reports are available to you by law, let’s look at how to get them the easy way. There is no catch, no sign up offer, no upsell you must purchase, you have a right as a citizen to know what your credit report is, and the reporting bureaus are obligated to provide you your report for free, annually.

Why You Should Know Your Credit Score

Your credit score is used in nearly every facet of your life these days, often without your even being aware that it was a factor. Everyone for example has rented an apartment or a home at one time or another, and it is often the case that as a prospective tenant, a landlord will pull your credit to determine your worthiness. Consumer stores use your credit in order to determine your risk, insurance companies adjust their rates based on your credit score, and of course, it is used as a determining factor for the approval of loans and credit cards.

Your credit report rating is an assessment of your financial health, and lenders, banks, companies and other institutions use them to assess your trustworthiness at a glance. A clean credit report, therefore has a variety of advantages. Most credit reports are riddled with errors or inaccuracies and it is your duty as a good consumer to address these and make sure you are being summed up in an accurate fashion.

Beware Online ‘Free’ Credit Report Offers

Obtaining your credit report isn’t very difficult. One word of caution, beware of online services or companies that attempt to attract you with a free offer to obtain your credit score for you. These are the offers that are too good to be true, and the lure of a free report is used to up sell you or introduce you to other offers that you don’t necessarily need or want.

Getting Your Reports Is Easy

Your scores are kept by the three major reporting bureaus, Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. The easiest way to obtain your free reports, mandated by law, is to use:

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

Which is a free site setup by the three bureaus so that you have a centralized location to get all three easily and without hassle. It’s won’t take you more than a few minutes and you can get your scores from each of the bureaus fast. Expect a slight variance between the three reports, they typically do not match, and be sure to clean up any inaccuracies that you find that could be falsely distorting your credit score. The process of disputing and cleaning up your credit score isn’t too difficult either, if you don’t mind doing it yourself.

Free Copy of My Credit Report

Christopher Wright asked:

So, you’re ready to begin straightening out your credit. The first step is to obtain your credit reports from all three major bureaus. Equifax, Transunion, and Experian. The good news is that all three have coloberated to create one central location where you can obtain a free copy of your credit file, AnnualCreditReport.com

Keep in my that you can only request one free file from each bureau once every twelve months. Also know that that free request only includes the credit file and NOT the credit score. Didn’t think it would be that easy did you!?

There are other situations that can occur that will allow you to get a copy of your credit file for free also.

-A consumer credit report was used as the basis for turning you down for a loan, insurance policy, or job, and you request a free consumer credit report within 60 days of being notified of the denial by the creditor, insurance company or potential employer or other source that turned you down. The source that turned you down must tell you why you were denied. You should include that information in your request to the consumer credit reporting agency when you ask for a free report.

-You are unemployed and will apply for unemployment within 60 days from the date you certify your unemployment with the consumer credit reporting agency from which you seek the report;

-You receive public assistance; or

-If you believe your file contains inaccurate information because of fraudulent activity, you can file a fraud alert.

Free Credit Report Service Recommended by Clark Howard

Lyn Collier asked:

You don’t have to sign up for a trial membership of a credit protection service to get free copies of your credit reports. There a few one-stop websites where you can order credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. It’s easy. One site, Annual Credit Report, is even recommended by Consumer advocate Clark Howard as well as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

By the way, your “credit report” is not the same thing as your “credit score.” The reports will give your credit activity only – not your FICO score. The FICO score is a number that is generated using info from all three agencies. It is a product of Fair Isaac Credit Org. (FICO) and must be purchased – $15.95

When you get to the site and start clicking around to request your free report, a few things might concern you. The main thing…and it is kind of unavoidable is the request for you to enter your Social Security number. If you have strong reservations about entering your SS number online, you can just skip the rest of the article and look up the 800 number and do the transaction on the phone. But either way, you will to have to provide your social security number.

Back to the online request. At some point during your online request for a free credit report , each bureau will try to sell you their products. Stay focused.

Here is the protocol for Experian for example: (and they are all pretty much alike so I will spare you the details on the other 2)

Step 1 on the Experian site will offer to sell you your Experian credit score for $5.95. Each bureau assigns a score, but their scores do not represent your FICO score. The FICO score is the one that most creditors use. I don’t recommend buying a credit score from anyone other than FICO. it’s the only one that counts. When asked if you want to purchase your “Experian” score, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “No thanks, I just want my free annual credit report.”

You will cruise through the steps pretty quickly. The only time you might have a problem is if you don’t answer the identification verification questions correctly. If you answer incorrectly you will be given a toll-free number to call where your i.d. can be verified manually.

Once you are done on the Experian site, you will be prompted to return to the Annual Credit Report site and continue with the other credit bureaus.

All the sites will walk you through the same process offering to sell you their products along the way. Remember, your goal is to get free credit reports, not buy stuff. Follow the prompts and you will instantly get your three credit reports free of charge.

Credit Score vs Credit Report

Chris Yarbrough asked:

Free Credit Reports are Your Right!

You’ve seen the ads: Get your free credit report here! The hard sell seems excessive since the report is free, right? Read the fine print. The Free Credit Report companies require a credit card that will not be billed as long as you cancel this service within 30 days of registering. If you forget to cancel in time, you may be required to pay over $20 a month for a listing of all your credit obligations, past and present.

This does not mean that you shouldn’t take advantage of the opportunity to review your credit report. Register for your free credit report, print out a copy and then call the toll free number immediately to save yourself the unplanned monthly fee.

Be prepared to ignore the add-on sales efforts the website will send your way. They are likely to offer you your credit rating (a number that alerts potential lenders to their risk level of letting you borrow money) and for yet another fee, they will explain what you credit report and that number mean.

Credit report vs Credit Rating

A credit report lists all the important financial data about you. Good, and bad, it is all in there. You are guaranteed by the United States Government one (1) free credit report per year. You will not be required to input any credit card data at all.

These are 100% free, and are part of a legislative package approved by congress, and signed by President Bush.

What’s the catch? Once you use your freebie, you either have to wait an entire year, or pay for your next one. Requesting a copy of your own credit report will not effect your credit rating. It is only effected when a creditor requests it.

A credit score is a number used by creditors to determine your ability to repay loans. This number moves up or down based on your payment history. Timely payments increase your score, while late payments decrease your score. You are not guaranteed a free credit score.

Visit [http://www.dreamhouseproject.com] for more information on how to obtain your free report directly from the three reporting agencies.

Free Copy Of Credit Report

Thomas Morva asked:

A recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) obligates the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and Trans Union – to provide a free credit report to any consumer who requests it.

The importance of a credit report cannot be ignored. An accurate report can help you obtain loans for major purchases, or even help you rent an apartment. All this, and more, becomes difficult if you have negative errors in your report.

A negative report can prove to be an obstacle if you are job hunting. This is because most employers will go through your credit history before offering employment. If you are actually employed, then a negative report can reduce your chances for further promotion. And, what if the end of it you realize that these errors were because of no fault of yours and that they could have been sorted out in the first place. You can avoid this situation by ordering a free credit report.

Once you get it, make sure the information provided in it is correct. This means that you must verify that your personal details such as your name, address, date of birth, and also the name of your current employer are correct. When this is done, do a check on your financial status. This is because your report will also contain information of your bank accounts, loans, credit payments. In other words, your credit card is also in a way your financial statement on which your future transactions will depend.

If you find any discrepancies, file a report in writing, with any one of the consumer reporting companies, for action. Apart from providing you with the opportunity to verify your accounts and check your credit score, these reports also provide a listing of the companies who have made enquiries on your reports.

These consumer reporting companies sell this information to bankers, creditors, insurers, employers and other business houses. It is imperative to order a free copy to ensure that there are no inaccuracies or errors in your report.

What Are Adverse Credit Reports and Their Consequences?

Clara Ghomes asked:

Negative credit rating of any consumer is termed as Adverse Credit Report. It is also called bad report, poor report, impaired report or sub-prime report. Many lenders, creditors and other credit extenders consider negative rating on reports as undesirable for purpose of loaning capital or money. A consumer’s report is compiled by credit bureaus and these reports contain data provided to them by creditors.

These reports contain detailed information of a lender-borrower relationship. Regular (usually monthly) reporting of account information, payment history, high and low balances, credit limits and any actions which were taken to recover the debts is done. This data is reviewed by a creditor to decide the terms and conditions of approving the loan.

With increasing popularity of credit, it became difficult for creditors to calculate and approve the loan and credit card applications efficiently. Credit scoring was adopted to address this issue as this method helped in credit availability at a low cost. Credit scoring involves creating numerical value to describe the worthiness (credit rating) of an applicant. The scores analyze the credit history to calculate the risk involved (financially) and help the lenders to assess applicants without prejudice. The scoring calculates the probability of the repayment of the loan (or any other obligation) taken by a consumer. Higher score means better credit rating (credit report) and higher probability of loan repayment.

The score can suffer when lenders report a lot of late payments. Also, when activity regarding collection agencies or bad judgements is reported, then the score decreases further. Repeated entries in the public record lower the score and form a negative rating or adverse credit report. The credit score number is calculated from factors like amount of outstanding versus how much the person owes, the duration of credit, the ability to pay bills, the credit types used and the number of inquiries. If a lender requests an applicant’s credit score, then it can decrease the score as more inquiries in short span of time indicates the difficult financial situation of the applicant.

The data in the report is sold by bureaus to lenders considering whether to offer a loan to a company or an individual or not. The information in the report is also given to other people with permissible purpose. The consequences of a negative rating or adverse credit report mean less likelihood that lender would approve the credit application of a person. Also, the interest rates are considerably affected by the credit report. If the credit rating is high, the interest rate is low and if the rating is low, the interest is high. Many times, employment, housing and even insurance could be denied to a person with adverse credit reports.
